<p> As Dynamite Specialty Products completes its yearlong switch to environmentally friendly packaging with a new, contemporary logo, the extensive project is helping the company spread the word about its commitment to nature in nutrition for animals and humans.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Dynamite, which has been making all-natural food, vitamins and nutritional supplements for four generations, decided more than 26 months ago that it was time to revamp the logo and packaging to reinforce its commitment to natural ingredients.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>It started working with Foerstel Design in Boise to develop a new look and tag line that would stress its commitment to natural ingredients in products for horses, dogs, humans and virtually all living creatures.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The tag line became “Innovation Guided By Nature, Backed By Science.” Several other tag lines were considered, including “Honest to Goodness Quality,” “Naturally Powerful. Scientifically Proven,” “Solid Science, Naturally Better.” The final version was selected because it succinctly communicates Dynamite’s foundation of doing things naturally while relying on scientifically proven results.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The graphic revisions were a major decision for Dynamite. The logo had been updated one time since its inception in 1982, but it was time for a fresh look. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>To create a complete synergistic package with the selected tagline, Dynamite’s goal was to develop a strong graphic image that would also convey its natural approach. The logo uses a strong typeface, Solex black italic, in an earthy color palette.&#13;<br />
<br />The graphic “D” of the corporate logo contains a highly stylized leaf that is meant to reinforce Dynamite’s organic and natural emphasis in its products and as a company. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The label was purposely designed to have a nostalgic feel to represent Dynamite’s longevity in the animal and human supplementation world.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Dynamite also wanted to give a better indication of the products’ uses and strengths on the front of the packaging. The logo system was further developed to include interchangeable graphics for different product lines. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>For instance, Dynamite’s equine products have a logo that uses a horse icon in the “D” rather than the stylized leaf. This system can be seen in all the lines, including canine, feline, plant foods, wound care, exotics, avian and machinery. Custom colors also help define each product line within the Dynamite lineup. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“The next step in the process was finding an alternative to plastic containers. When we looked at a warehouse full of plastic containers, we knew we had to do something differently,” said Debbie Johnson, marketing director at Dynamite Specialty Products.   </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“Our desire to be good stewards of the earth was even more important than our desire to have a new look,” said Callie Novak, Dynamite CEO. “It took us nine months to complete the process of replacing plastic containers with multi-walled kraft bags made of recyclable paper and sewn at the top. The bags have an earth-friendly moisture and grease barrier that is safe for animals and will break down in the recycling process.” </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“We selected our paper bag manufacturer through its affiliation with the Sustainable Packaging Coalition. The biodegradable moisture and grease barrier is a patented product. The manufacturer also uses only Sustainable Forestry Initiative® certified paper. The components of the packaging line up with Dynamite’s goals,” Johnson added.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>While the switch has been costly in dollars plus taking untold hours of company time, Dynamite expects to recover the costs within two years. &#8220;We cut the overall weight of our packaging by at least 300 percent and developed more space-efficient packaging as well, resulting in reduced shipping costs and reduced use of fossil fuels,&#8221; Novak said. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“For example, we previously used five-pound plastic buckets that weighed 10.4 ounces. Our new five-pound bag weighs only 1.6 ounces. The 25-pound bucket weighed 1.95 pounds, and the new bag weighs only 3.2 oz.  </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>&#8220;The most important consideration,” she continued, “is the fact that we always have prided ourselves on using ecologically sensitive ingredients in our natural dog food, natural horse feed and other products. Making our manufacturing processes &#8216;greener&#8217; is an extension of our commitment to the best possible nutrition.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve also thought &#8216;inside the box&#8217; by instituting energy-saving practices such as energy-efficient lighting in our warehouse, automatic light switches in our office, paperless invoices and 100 percent recycled paper whenever paper is necessary.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#13;</p>

In addition, Alan Evans of Elevation Building Group took first place in Builder Concept &amp; Workmanship for his construction work on the home and NorthPoint Design won first place in their category for both Interior Furnishings and Interior Finishes. </p>

Architect Michael F. Gallagher worked closely with the owners to design a home on the steep lot that feels completely level and accessible. <p> The “Next Generation” great room concept spans 3 levels, encompassing the living room, kitchen, dining, family and game rooms all the way up to third level lofts. <p> On Saturday, May 19, 2007, 8:00PM at the John Slade Ely House (51 Trumbull St. New Haven, CT) Independent artist, Jellyshirts, will present why they have teamed with IndepenDisc to issue the unreleased 1998 Album &#8220;Outside&#8221; on USB Flashdrive format. This show will be held to introduce the public to the USB Flashdrive album as an alternative to (and eventual replacement of) the CD. There will be a short demonstration of the Flashdrive, and then IndepenDisc owner Gary Vollono will appear on a panel with the band to field questions. The band will then perform for the audience. Admission is free.</p>

<p>&#8220;The Album format is dying along with the CD. Digital downloads are robbing the artist of the quality and full fidelity of the medium in which they work. Downloads have also diminished the importance of the Album as a legitimate artistic presentation of the musical statement. The Flashdrive format restores all that and more.&#8221; says IndepenDisc owner Gary Vollono. Embracing the further advancement of technology, Gary contacted Jellyshirts frontman, Bret Logan, about a &#8220;great lost Jellyshirts album&#8221; that had been shelved 10 years earlier after only a short printing and no distribution.  </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Bret Logan responds: &#8220;It didn&#8217;t take much convincing from Gary to want Outside to be a part of his dream. While all the wranglings that had caused the album to be shelved were now gone, there was still little incentive to release it on CD. It had become clear that MP3s sales were now driving the music business and that the CD was going extinct. But that said, we also had no interest in releasing Outside as a smattering of MP3s. Not only are MP3s inferior quality, we also felt strongly that Outside was intended to be heard as an album.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>What Gary proposed was something I&#8217;d been hoping for for a long time: the possibility of distributing an album in better-than-CD-quality [.wav] format, and requiring no moving parts &#8212; nothing to spin, skip, scratch, or wear-out in any way.  As a bonus, the USB drive also offers a lot more room than a CD, which let us add five more songs not on the original album, and an 8 min. video of original recording footage, plus dozens of pictures, and &#8216;liner notes&#8217; sorts of extras.&#8221;</p>

One of the most revered and deeply appreciated international garden styles, the 8½-acre addition will further the organization’s dual mission of horticulture and sculpture. </p>

<p>“Fred and Lena Meijer shared their love of Japanese garden design with us many years ago,” said President and CEO David Hooker. “This artistic, centuries–old yet timeless horticultural presentation style is an important contribution to this organization.” </p>

<p>The garden, to be located in the northeast corner of the 132-acre property, will exude the very essence of the Japanese tradition—tranquility, simplicity and beauty. The design will re-imagine existing features of the land—water, elevation changes and quiet surroundings—with a combination of manicured and naturalistic areas. </p>

<p>The artful design by Hoichi Kurisu, president and founder of Kurisu International, Inc., will reflect this essence through a variety of horticultural elements such as zen, moss and bonsai gardens, scenic bridges, waterfalls and a tea house, among many other features. Plans also include works of contemporary sculpture by major international artists whose aesthetic and form will work in harmony with the space.</p>

<p>“Highly unique to our Japanese Garden will be the inclusion of Contemporary sculpture,” said Vice President and Chief Curator of Horticulture and Sculpture Joseph Becherer. “Several landmark works by international masters will represent the aesthetic and form of the Japanese tradition while combining our dual mission of horticulture and sculpture.”</p>

<p>The first confirmed sculpture is a major work by Anish Kapoor, one of the most acclaimed artists working today. It is one of the few works in granite the artist has created. Circular units on the front surface of the sculpture reflect and enhance the surrounding environment while the quiet mood of the work encourages meditation. </p>

<p>Meijer Gardens recently began a $  22 million capital campaign to support the project. Frederik and Lena Meijer and Richard and Helen DeVos made significant gifts. </p>

<p> The John Sullivan Brigade have announced the release of Live My Dream Rock True, a 24-song indie rock opera about a fictional band’s journey from anonymity to stardom, on South Tenth Records. The New York-based indie rockers will be supporting their release with a 2011 multi-city summer tour.</p>

<p>The band’s third CD since their formation in 2005, Live My Dream Rock True is reminiscent of other well-known rock operas such as the Who’s Tommy and Green Day’s American Idiot. The rock quintet’s vintage, hard rock sound, which was captured in a live studio setting, embraced the rock concept album format that their fan base actively supports.</p>

<p>Recorded and mixed with engineer Mike Mulieri (the bassist for rock band The Upwelling) at New York’s Sabella Studios, the John Sullivan Brigade is led by producer John Sullivan on vocals, guitar and piano. Drummer Steve Glover, guitarist Russ Rogers, bassist Brian Caltabiano and saxophonist Charlie Lopresto round out the rest of the Brigade’s lineup.</p>

<p>There is something about male Pop singers that transcends something far more superior than your average mainstream artist, in the music industry.
